Our family's experience with Dahlgren Johnson was very frustrating from beginning to end. Here is a summary of our experience in the hopes that other people will not suffer the same frustration. Contract: The contract was only focused on the cost of the work to be done. This was our first experience with home renovation and we did not get start or finish dates in writing.
This was our first mistake. Start Date: It took multiple emails, phone calls, and in-person visits to get a solid start date for the work to begin over the course of weeks. The first visit consisted of a Dahlgren Johnson contractor to see the extent of the work to be done. While I was explaining the work to be done, he cut me off to take a personal phone call.
He left after 15 minutes without doing any work. Timeliness of Work: Most weeks consisted of little, if any, work being completed. The project was a simple tiled shower installation. There were approximately 14-16 days of actual work that were completed, but they were spaced over 8+ weeks. It took 4 and months after the initial deposit was made to complete the project.
Quality of Work: The work was not completed according to the contract, steps were skipped, and the grout was never sealed. The shower hardware was also not installed correctly and didn't work properly at first. I was able to make the corrections to fixtures to restore proper functionality. There have been pieces of tile and grout that have cracked and chipped away and a seat that was installed was not properly angled to allow the water to run off and results in puddles that need to be wiped off after each use.
There were never any plumbing or electrical inspections conducted nor were any permits ever pulled. Cleanup: The contractor used our family garbage, basement, and garage floor as his personal construction waste receptacles. Pieces of broken tile, nails, and saw and construction dust were left for the user to clean up. Payment: A letter was provided to the contractor to provide the names of the employees who worked on the project, and the license number(s) of anyone who did plumbing work, and written proof that the plumbing work passed inspection or the final payment would not be made.
I never received any response from Dahlgren Johnson. At the time of this review, it has been 9 months since the project was "completed." I would not recommend Dahlgren Johnson for any project.
